Show of the Month: Pretty Little Liars

Hey there,

For this week's post I'm going to continue my Show of the Month post. I'm a little bit late with reactions to this but this month's show is of course Pretty Little Liars.

So let's go :)

I first started watching PLL two summer's ago and from the first episode I was in love. Whether you're happy with how the show ended or not, you have to admit the storyline definitely leaves you wanting more. For anyone who has never watched the show, it is about a group of girls, who after their friends disappearance, start receiving creepy and threatening texts from an anonymous person, named A.

Seeing as the series has just finished, I'm going to include my thoughts about the ending and how it compared to what I wanted to happen. Just in case anyone hasn't finished it yet, I'm going to give a disclaimer now, as spoilers will lie ahead.

***SPOILERS***

First of all, I'm going to take it right back to when I first caught up with the show. The first episode that I was able to watch alongside the rest of the world, was when they got out of the dollhouse in Season 5 and found out who A was (I'm not sure if they were the same episode but it was the end of Season 5 anyway). At the time, I remember being pretty disappointed finding out that A was Charles, or Cece as we knew her. She was a more regular figure in the show and so I'm glad that it was her but I couldn't help feeling a bit disappointed at the same time.

It was announced that PLL was going to be kept on for 2 more seasons and this really excited me as I had finally caught up and now I would be able to watch it along with everyone else. When the show came back I was a bit confused again, as none of the original couples were still together and it all just seemed a bit too weird. But eventually things started to settle back to normal, everyone was back in Rosewood and before we knew it Cece was dead and now new texts were being sent from someone with the name A.D. now. There's no point in denying that I am someone that gets really involved in the TV shows they watch and I love nothing more than theorising and trying to guess the ending of the show.

All I can say about the ending to the last ever season of Pretty Little Liars is that I'm very disappointed. I expected that after the ending of Season 5 being mehh that they would want to end the series with a bang. Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure that loads of fans were really happy with how it ended but for me it wasn't enough. I had spent so long trying to determine who it would be, watching fan theories and talking about it with my friends. I heard somewhere that it was going to be someone who was in the show regularly and this got me excited, I really wanted it to be one of the liars or their partners (apart from Paige, she didn't seem like she had been around enough). I had narrowed it down to be either Alison or Caleb. I really really wanted it to be Alison because, as one fan theory explained it, for her to be A.D. would have made the whole series her game from the very beginning, and I just thought that was brilliant! As much as I love Haleb, part of me wanted it to be Caleb because he is definitely smart enough and he's a series regular, so someone that we may not expect.

What we actually got was Alex Drake, Spencer's twin sister. I think part of the reason I didn't like this theory was that I saw loads of people had already guessed that it was her and I guess it got a bit spoiled. Now don't get me wrong Troian Bellisario's acting was incredible (maybe not the accent but I will forgive her), she was definitely the best one of the liar's to pull it off! For me though, having someone who wasn't originally part of the show just seemed like a repeat of the Season 5 ending with Cece. The actual finale was also a bit disappointing. The first half of it was just about the couples. Don't get me wrong, I am glad to see everyone together (so happy about Spoby!) but for a show with so many unanswered questions, they wasted a lot of time on the more obvious things. When A.D was revealed, I feel like rather than getting the answers we wanted, too much time was put into the back story of why, we knew about Alex's childhood and her meeting Cece and that was why after a few minutes, there was no need for such an elaboration. Parts of the show were just plain weird, like the fact that Wren is now a necklace and also the father of the Emison babies. For me, one of the most annoying parts of the finale was the fact that we got played about how the moms got out of the closet! Out of all the answers, this is the one I wanted most!!

Now, don't get me wrong I would still highly recommend the show to anyone looking for a new series, but I think for such a big show with so many possibilities, they cut the show off when there was so much more to offer. One last thing that I think was a bit too convenient was that all the liars got a happy ending. It may be a bit cruel, but after a show that showed the girls being tortured for about a decade, the happy ending just seemed too typical and very un-PLL.

A lot of people probably disagree with me on my opinions of the show but let me know what you thought about the ending whether you were happy or not?

Thank you for reading :)
